3D Face Scan: What is It and How Does It Work?
A 3D face scan is a three-dimensional record of the surface of your face and neck. It captures the shape and proportions of the face quickly and safely, without x-rays, and gives us a true-to-life model to plan around, rather than flat photographs.
Why we capture the face in 3D
Orthodontic treatment affects more than the teeth. It changes how the teeth sit within the face, the profile and the balance of the smile. Capturing the face in three dimensions lets us plan with the whole face in view, so tooth movements are chosen to suit your features and not just the bite in isolation. This face-first approach is central to how our consultants plan.
The face scan is combined with our other 3D records of the teeth and jaws to build a complete picture. From there, treatment can be planned and, where relevant, you can be shown a simulation or estimate of the likely change in the face before treatment begins. For jaw surgery cases, the face scan supports the 3D surgical planning carried out with our consultant maxillofacial surgeon.
