Impacted Tooth / Impacted Canine: What is It and How is It Treated?

Impacted teeth are common condition where there is something preventing the normal eruption of the tooth. The most commonly affected teeth are impacted wisdom teeth, followed by impacted canines.

How to Identify an Impacted Tooth / Impacted Canine

Impacted teeth are not always easy to identify but when an adult tooth does not erupt as expected (normally within 6 months of the adult tooth on the opposite side of the same jaw) it should be suspected. An orthodontist can take an x-ray to confirm this.

Causes of an Impacted Tooth / Impacted Canine

Effects of Impacted Tooth / Impacted Canine

  • Fusion of the tooth to the bone

  • Lack of space in the dental arch

  • Dense overlying bone

  • Small supplemental teeth

  • If left in place, a cyst (a fluid filled space) can form around the impacted tooth

  • When a tooth is impacted it means that a tooth will be missing from the teeth in the mouth

  • If left in place, it's possible that the impacted tooth can eat away the roots of nearby teeth

Treatment of Crooked Teeth

Treatment depends on cause, patient age, severity and patient preference but can include:

  • Orthodontic techniques using fixed braces, clear aligners and/or orthodontic mini-implants

  • A surgical 3D x-ray guided laser 'expose and pack' procedure, whereby the tooth is uncovered to aid its eruption

  • A surgical 3D x-ray guided 'expose and bond' procedure, whereby the tooth is uncovered and a gold chain attached, so the tooth can be pulled into alignment

  • Removal of the impacted tooth, then closure of any space with orthodontics or space opening for a bridge or dental implant. Alternatively the gap can be accepted.
