Facial Surgery Planning
Facial Surgery Planning: What is It and How Does It Work?
Facial surgery planning is the detailed 3D preparation carried out before any jaw surgery. The face, jaws and teeth are brought together in a single three-dimensional model, and the planned movements are worked out and rehearsed virtually before treatment begins. We carry out this planning in-house, using our own virtual surgical planning software. The aim is simple: plan the result first, then carry it out accurately.
3D planning as proof of consultant-led capability
3D planning matters because of what it lets our consultants do together. It gives Dr Chris Donaldson, Consultant Orthodontist, and Mr Ash Messiha, Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon, a shared and precise view of the same case, so the orthodontic and surgical plans are built to match. Dr Donaldson leads digital treatment planning and 3D printing across medical and dental work in his hospital role, and applies that experience to planning here. The technology serves the plan, and the plan is led by the specialists.
You can see a simulation of the likely result before treatment, as an estimate to guide the plan rather than a guarantee. Once the movements are agreed, the plan can be transferred to surgery using 3D-printed guides that help position the jaws as planned; these guides are produced externally to our specification. Planning this way means the surgical result is discussed and understood before treatment, rather than worked out on the day.
