Orthodontic Retainers

Orthodontic Retainers: What are They and How Do They Work?

Orthodontic retainers are designed to maintain the position of your teeth after orthodontic treatment. They work by gently holding your teeth in their new alignment, helping prevent them from shifting back to their original or new positions. Regular wear and care of your retainer are highly recommended after orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontic Retainer Types

Retainers can be removable or fixed, and your orthodontist will help determine the best type for you. Removable retainers are typically made of a type of thin clear plastic which is custom made to fit over or around your teeth. Fixed retainers are bonded to the tongue side of the front teeth. It is possible to have both fixed and removable retainers and this is a popular option.

Removable Orthodontic Retainers

Fixed Orthodontic Retainers

  • Can be removed

  • Can break or be lost

  • Hold all the teeth they cover in position (typically all the erupted teeth)

  • Typically only hold the front teeth in position

  • Can break and need repair

  • Need good oral hygiene around to keep clean

How often do I need retainers for?

Each patient will be given specific advice on how long to wear their retainers and the frequency of wear, however it is common for patients to be advised to wear their retainers at 'nighttime for a lifetime', or as long as you want to keep your teeth in their final positions.
