Laser Tongue-Tie / Lip-Tie Release
Laser Tongue-Tie / Lip-Tie Release: What is It and How Does It Work?
Release of a tongue tie or lip tie (frenulotomy or frenectomy) is a small procedure that divides or reshapes the restrictive band of tissue so the tongue or lip can move more freely. It is only recommended after assessment, when a tie is affecting movement or function.
How the laser approach works
Where it is clinically appropriate, the release can be carried out using a laser rather than scissors or a blade. A laser lets us work precisely on a very small area and, in many cases, means less bleeding and a quicker, more comfortable recovery. Whether a laser or another method is most suitable is decided at assessment, and depends on the individual and the type of tie.
What It Is Used For
-
Releasing a tongue tie (ankyloglossia) where tongue movement is restricted
-
Releasing a lip tie where lip movement is restricted
-
Supporting feeding, oral function or speech where a tie is a contributing factor, alongside other professionals where needed
Not every tie needs to be released. Suitability is determined by a clinical assessment.
